Dirac delta function

Description

Let Cc∞(R)C_c^\infty(\mathbb{R}) be the space of infinitely differentiable functions φ:R→C\varphi : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{C} that vanish outside a bounded set. The Dirac delta is the distribution δ\delta that maps each test function φ∈Cc∞(R)\varphi \in C_c^\infty(\mathbb{R}) to δ[φ]=φ(0)\delta[\varphi] = \varphi(0). Informally, one writes ∫−∞∞δ(t) φ(t) dt=φ(0)\int_{-\infty}^{\infty} \delta(t)\, \varphi(t)\, dt = \varphi(0), as if δ\delta were a function that is 00 away from 00 and has total integral 11. No actual function has this property. The delta is a generalized function.

Remarks

As a measure, δ\delta gives the mass 11 to each set that contains 00 and the mass 00 to the other sets. The shifted delta δ(t−a)\delta(t - a) maps φ\varphi to φ(a)\varphi(a). For a>0a > 0, its Laplace transform is e−ase^{-a s}, and for a=0a = 0 the usual convention gives 11. In the sense of distributions, δ\delta is the derivative of the Heaviside step function. In differential equations, δ(t−a)\delta(t - a) models an impulse: a large force that acts for a very short time around t=at = a.

Explanations

L1 human

The delta function is an idealized spike at 00, infinitely tall and infinitely thin, with area 11. It is not a real function. But it makes sense when we integrate it against a smooth function, and the result is the value of that function at 00.

What this node needs for W2
  • section Invariants: a table of the main invariants (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
