Heaviside step function

Description

The Heaviside step function is the function H:R→RH : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R} with H(x)=0H(x) = 0 for x<0x < 0 and H(x)=1H(x) = 1 for x>0x > 0. Conventions for the value H(0)H(0) differ: common choices are 00, 12\frac{1}{2} and 11. For a≥0a \ge 0 and s∈Cs \in \mathbb{C} with Re⁡s>0\operatorname{Re} s > 0, the Laplace transform of t↦H(t−a)t \mapsto H(t - a) is e−as/se^{-a s} / s.

Remarks

The function t↦H(t−a)t \mapsto H(t - a) switches a signal on at the time aa. For example, f(t)H(t−a)f(t) H(t - a) is 00 before aa and f(t)f(t) after aa. For g:[0,∞)→Cg : [0, \infty) \to \mathbb{C} with a Laplace transform GG and a≥0a \ge 0, the shifted function t↦H(t−a) g(t−a)t \mapsto H(t - a)\, g(t - a) has the transform e−asG(s)e^{-a s} G(s). In the sense of distributions, the derivative of HH is the Dirac delta. It is named after Oliver Heaviside.

Explanations

L1 human

The step function is off before time 00 and on after it. It models a switch, such as a voltage turned on at one instant.

What this node needs for W2
  • section Invariants: a table of the main invariants (0 of 1)
  • edge instance_of out (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
