Definition
Write points of as with , and let . Let be complex matrices with Let be a constant, the mass. The Dirac equation is the partial differential equation for an unknown function , where is the partial derivative in . Units are chosen with .
Remarks
The matrices generate a representation of the Clifford algebra of . A standard choice is the Dirac representation, in which .
Example: in the Dirac representation, is a solution. Indeed depends only on , and , since is an eigenvector of for the eigenvalue .
Non-example: for , is not a solution, because .
Applying the operator to the equation and using the anticommutation relations gives , the Klein–Gordon equation for each component.
