Definition
Let be a directed set and let be a category. A direct system in over is a family of objects for with morphisms for all , such that:
- for all .
- for all .
A direct limit of this system is an object with morphisms such that:
- for all .
- For every object with morphisms such that for all , there is a unique morphism with for all .
Remarks
The direct limit is written . It is the colimit of the diagram given by the system, and it is unique up to a unique isomorphism. In sets, groups, rings and modules it always exists. There it is the disjoint union of the divided by a relation: and are identified when for some .
Example: let for , and let be multiplication by . The maps , , make a direct limit. Clause 1 holds because .
Non-example: the maps into satisfy clause 1 but not clause 2. For with the maps above, there is no group homomorphism with for all and . Indeed would be an element with , and has no such element.
