Probability theory and stochastic processes Probability distributions Example
Dirichlet distribution
Example
Let and , and let . The Dirichlet distribution is the law of a random vector in the open simplex . The vector has the density on the set where all and , with ; here is the gamma function. A construction: if are independent and has the gamma distribution with shape and scale , then has law . Check for : the density becomes on , so has the beta distribution with parameters . The means are and the variances are .
Remarks
If all , the density is constant, so the law is uniform on the simplex. The Dirichlet law is the conjugate prior of the multinomial law: with prior for the cell probabilities and observed counts , the posterior is . It is the finite-dimensional building block of the Dirichlet process.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
