Definition

Let (X,𝒜)(X, \mathcal{A}) be a measurable space, where 𝒜\mathcal{A} is a sigma-algebra on XX. Let HH be a probability measure on (X,𝒜)(X, \mathcal{A}) and let α>0\alpha > 0 be a real number. A random probability measure GG on (X,𝒜)(X, \mathcal{A}) is a Dirichlet process with concentration parameter α\alpha and base measure HH if the following holds. For every finite partition A1,…,ArA_1, \ldots, A_r of XX into sets of 𝒜\mathcal{A}, the random vector (G(A1),…,G(Ar))(G(A_1), \ldots, G(A_r)) has the Dirichlet distribution with parameters (αH(A1),…,αH(Ar))(\alpha H(A_1), \ldots, \alpha H(A_r)). Here a parameter equal to 00 means that the corresponding coordinate is 00 almost surely. One writes G∼DP(α,H)G \sim \mathrm{DP}(\alpha, H).

Remarks

Example: take A∈𝒜A \in \mathcal{A} with 0<H(A)<10 < H(A) < 1, and the partition A,X∖AA, X \setminus A. Then G(A)G(A) has the Beta distribution with parameters αH(A)\alpha H(A) and α(1−H(A))\alpha (1 - H(A)). Hence E[G(A)]=H(A)E[G(A)] = H(A) and Var(G(A))=H(A)(1−H(A))/(α+1)\mathrm{Var}(G(A)) = H(A)(1 - H(A))/(\alpha + 1).

Non-example: let HH be uniform on [0,1][0, 1] and let G=HG = H be constant. Then GG is not a Dirichlet process for any α\alpha. For A=[0,1/2]A = [0, 1/2] the variance of G(A)G(A) is 00, while a Dirichlet process gives the variance 1/(4(α+1))>01/(4(\alpha + 1)) > 0.

A Dirichlet process exists for every α\alpha and HH as above. One construction is stick-breaking. Let V1,V2,…V_1, V_2, \ldots be independent with the Beta distribution with parameters 11 and α\alpha, and let θ1,θ2,…\theta_1, \theta_2, \ldots be independent with law HH and independent of the ViV_i. Put wk=Vk∏i<k(1−Vi)w_k = V_k \prod_{i < k} (1 - V_i). Then G=∑k≥1wkδθkG = \sum_{k \ge 1} w_k \delta_{\theta_k} is a Dirichlet process with parameters α\alpha and HH, where δθ\delta_\theta is the Dirac measure at θ\theta. In particular a Dirichlet process is a discrete measure almost surely.

Conjugacy: suppose G∼DP(α,H)G \sim \mathrm{DP}(\alpha, H) and, given GG, the points x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n are independent with law GG. Then, given x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n, the measure GG is a Dirichlet process with concentration α+n\alpha + n and base measure (αH+∑i=1nδxi)/(α+n)(\alpha H + \sum_{i=1}^n \delta_{x_i})/(\alpha + n).
