Dot product

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 and let x=(x1,…,xn)x = (x_1, \dots, x_n) and y=(y1,…,yn)y = (y_1, \dots, y_n) be vectors of Rn\R^n. The dot product of xx and yy is the real number x⋅y=∑i=1nxiyi=x1y1+x2y2+⋯+xnyn.x \cdot y = \sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i y_i = x_1 y_1 + x_2 y_2 + \cdots + x_n y_n.

Remarks

In matrix notation, x⋅y=xTyx \cdot y = x^T y for column vectors xx and yy. It is symmetric, bilinear and positive definite, so it is an inner product on Rn\R^n. Geometrically, x⋅y=∥x∥∥y∥cos⁡θx \cdot y = \norm{x} \norm{y} \cos\theta, where θ\theta is the angle between xx and yy. The same formula defines a symmetric bilinear form on FnF^n for every field FF.

Explanations

L1 human

The dot product multiplies two vectors coordinate by coordinate and adds the results. For example, (1,2,3)⋅(4,5,6)=4+10+18=32(1, 2, 3) \cdot (4, 5, 6) = 4 + 10 + 18 = 32. It is zero exactly when the two vectors are perpendicular, or when one of them is zero.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 2 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
