Dual map

Definition

Let FF be a field, let VV and WW be vector spaces over FF, and let T ⁣:V→WT \colon V \to W be a linear map. The dual map of TT, also called its transpose, is the map T∗ ⁣:W∗→V∗,T∗(f)=f∘T,T^* \colon W^* \to V^*, \qquad T^*(f) = f \circ T, between the dual spaces.

Remarks

The dual map is linear. It reverses the order of composition: (T∘S)∗=S∗∘T∗(T \circ S)^* = S^* \circ T^*, and (id⁡V)∗=id⁡V∗(\id_V)^* = \id_{V^*}. In dual bases, the matrix of T∗T^* is the transpose of the matrix of TT, see the matrix of the dual map. The kernel of T∗T^* is the annihilator of the image of TT.

Explanations

L1 human

A linear form on WW can be pulled back to VV: first apply TT, then the form. The dual map does this pullback. It goes in the opposite direction, from W∗W^* to V∗V^*.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 6 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

1 node uses this node, directly or through other nodes.
