Dual space

Definition

Let FF be a field and let VV be a vector space over FF. The dual space of VV is the vector space V∗=Hom⁡F(V,F)V^* = \Hom_F(V, F) of all linear forms on VV. Its operations are pointwise: (f+g)(v)=f(v)+g(v)(f + g)(v) = f(v) + g(v) and (af)(v)=af(v)(af)(v) = a f(v).

Remarks

It is a special case of the space of linear maps. If dim⁡V=n\dim V = n is finite, then dim⁡V∗=n\dim V^* = n, see the dimension of the dual space. The elements of FnF^n act on column vectors by the dot product, and this identifies (Fn)∗(F^n)^* with FnF^n. For infinite-dimensional VV, the space V∗V^* is not isomorphic to VV.

Explanations

L1 human

The dual space collects all the ways to measure a vector by one linear number. On R3\R^3, each linear form is a dot product with a fixed vector. So, in finite dimensions, the dual space looks like the original space, but its elements play a different role.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 5 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
