Dual matroid

Builds on MatroidBasis of a matroidMatroid rank

Definition

Let MM be a matroid on a finite ground set EE, and let ℬ\mathcal{B} be its set of bases. The dual matroid M∗M^* is the matroid on EE whose set of bases is ℬ∗={E∖B:B∈ℬ}.\mathcal{B}^* = \set{E \setminus B : B \in \mathcal{B}}.

Remarks

It is a theorem that ℬ∗\mathcal{B}^* satisfies the basis exchange property, so M∗M^* is indeed a matroid. Its independent sets are the subsets of EE disjoint from some basis of MM. Its rank function is r∗(A)=∣A∣−r(E)+r(E∖A)r^*(A) = \abs{A} - r(E) + r(E \setminus A), where rr is the rank function of MM, and (M∗)∗=M(M^*)^* = M. The bases of M∗M^* are the cobases of MM, and the circuits of M∗M^* are the cocircuits of MM.

Example: for the uniform matroid Uk,nU_{k,n}, whose bases are the kk-element subsets of {1,…,n}\set{1, \dots, n}, the dual has as bases the (n−k)(n-k)-element subsets, so Uk,n∗=Un−k,nU_{k,n}^* = U_{n-k,n}.

Non-example: the complements of the independent sets of MM are in general not the independent sets of M∗M^*. For M=U1,2M = U_{1,2} on {1,2}\set{1, 2}, the complement of ∅\emptyset is {1,2}\set{1, 2}, which is not independent in M∗=U1,2M^* = U_{1,2}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
