Definition

Consider an infinite thin plate in plane stress, of an elastic–perfectly plastic material with yield stress σY\sigma_Y. Let it contain a straight crack ∣x1∣<a\abs{x_1} < a on the x1x_1-axis. Let it be loaded by a remote tension σ\sigma perpendicular to the crack, with 0<σ<σY0 < \sigma < \sigma_Y. The Dugdale strip-yield model replaces the plastic zones by two strips a≤∣x1∣<a+ρa \le \abs{x_1} < a + \rho on the crack line. It solves the linear elastic problem for a fictitious crack ∣x1∣<a+ρ\abs{x_1} < a + \rho such that:

  1. the faces of the fictitious crack are free of traction on ∣x1∣<a\abs{x_1} < a;
  2. on the strips a≤∣x1∣<a+ρa \le \abs{x_1} < a + \rho the faces carry a closing normal traction equal to σY\sigma_Y;
  3. the length ρ\rho is chosen so that the total mode I stress intensity factor at the tips x1=±(a+ρ)x_1 = \pm(a + \rho) is zero.

Remarks

Clause 3 gives the plastic zone length through aa+ρ=cos⁡(πσ2σY).\frac{a}{a + \rho} = \cos\left( \frac{\pi \sigma}{2 \sigma_Y} \right). Check for small loads: cos⁡x≈1−x2/2\cos x \approx 1 - x^2/2 gives ρ≈π2σ2a8σY2=π8(KIσY)2\rho \approx \frac{\pi^2 \sigma^2 a}{8 \sigma_Y^2} = \frac{\pi}{8} \left( \frac{K_I}{\sigma_Y} \right)^2 with KI=σπaK_I = \sigma \sqrt{\pi a}, so the plastic zone is small compared with aa. As σ→σY\sigma \to \sigma_Y, ρ→∞\rho \to \infty, which describes general yielding of the plate. The opening of the fictitious crack at the physical tip x1=ax_1 = a is δ=8σYaπEln⁡sec⁡(πσ2σY)\delta = \frac{8 \sigma_Y a}{\pi E} \ln \sec\left( \frac{\pi \sigma}{2 \sigma_Y} \right), with EE the Young's modulus. Non-example: the Irwin plastic zone correction, which only shifts the elastic crack tip by a length proportional to (KI/σY)2(K_I / \sigma_Y)^2, does not impose clause 2 and is not the Dugdale model.
