Plane stress
Summary
Plane stress is a state of stress in which all stress acts in one plane. The components that involve the normal direction to that plane vanish. It is the standard model for thin plates and sheets loaded only in their own plane. It reduces a three-dimensional elasticity problem to a two-dimensional one, often solved with an Airy stress function.
