Plane stress
Builds on Cauchy stress tensor
Definition
Let be a Cauchy stress tensor field on a region of , and let be an orthonormal basis. The field is in plane stress with respect to the plane spanned by if at every point Equivalently, : the traction on every plane normal to vanishes.
Remarks
Example: uniaxial tension is in plane stress, since its only nonzero component is .
Non-example: the hydrostatic stress with is not in plane stress for any plane, since for every unit vector .
In the usual two-dimensional theory one also assumes that do not depend on . For an isotropic linear elastic material with Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio , plane stress gives the out-of-plane strain , which is not zero in general. Plane stress is exact only in special cases; for thin plates loaded in their plane it is an approximation that improves as the thickness decreases.
