Statement

Let XX be a metric space, let A⊆XA \subseteq X be a closed subset, and let LL be a locally convex topological vector space over ℝ\R. Let f ⁣:A→Lf \colon A \to L be a continuous map. Then there is a continuous map F ⁣:X→LF \colon X \to L with F(a)=f(a)F(a) = f(a) for all a∈Aa \in A. Moreover, FF can be chosen with F(X)F(X) contained in the convex hull of f(A)f(A).

Remarks

The proof covers X∖AX \setminus A by small open balls whose radii are comparable to the distance to AA. It then takes a locally finite open refinement, which exists because metric spaces are paracompact. For each set WW of the refinement, pick a point aW∈Aa_W \in A close to WW, and let (φW)(\varphi_W) be a partition of unity subordinate to the refinement. Set F(x)=∑WφW(x)f(aW)F(x) = \sum_W \varphi_W(x) f(a_W) for x∉Ax \notin A and F=fF = f on AA. Continuity at points of AA uses that aWa_W is near xx when WW is near xx, together with the local convexity of LL.

Example: with L=ℝL = \R, the theorem gives the Tietze extension theorem for metric spaces, with the bound inf⁡f≤F≤sup⁡f\inf f \le F \le \sup f.

The hypothesis that AA is closed is necessary. On X=[0,1]X = [0, 1], the map f(x)=sin⁡(1/x)f(x) = \sin(1/x) is continuous on A=(0,1]A = (0, 1], but it has no continuous extension to XX, because ff has no limit at 00.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem extends the Tietze extension theorem from real-valued to vector-valued maps, at the price of assuming that XX is metric. Its main consequence is that every convex subset of a locally convex metrizable topological vector space is an absolute retract. The proof is a model use of partitions of unity on paracompact spaces, and the same technique appears in the Michael selection theorem.
