Statement

Let FF be a field and let AA be an n×nn \times n square matrix over FF. Suppose that AA has nn linearly independent eigenvectors q1,…,qnq_1, \dots, q_n in FnF^n, with Aqi=λiqiA q_i = \lambda_i q_i. Let QQ be the matrix with columns q1,…,qnq_1, \dots, q_n, and let Λ\Lambda be the diagonal matrix with diagonal entries λ1,…,λn\lambda_1, \dots, \lambda_n. Then QQ is invertible and A=QΛQ−1.A = Q \Lambda Q^{-1}. Conversely, let A=QΛQ−1A = Q \Lambda Q^{-1} with QQ invertible and Λ\Lambda diagonal. Then the columns of QQ are linearly independent eigenvectors of AA. The diagonal entries of Λ\Lambda are the corresponding eigenvalues.

Remarks

The columns of AQAQ are the vectors Aqi=λiqiA q_i = \lambda_i q_i, and these are also the columns of QΛQ \Lambda. Thus AQ=QΛAQ = Q\Lambda, and QQ is invertible because its columns are independent. For example, A=(2103)A = \begin{pmatrix} 2 & 1 \\ 0 & 3 \end{pmatrix} has the eigenvector (1,0)T(1, 0)^T for 22 and (1,1)T(1, 1)^T for 33. Thus A=QΛQ−1A = Q \Lambda Q^{-1} with Q=(1101)Q = \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} and Λ=diag⁡(2,3)\Lambda = \operatorname{diag}(2, 3). The hypothesis is necessary: (0100)\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ 0 & 0 \end{pmatrix} has only one independent eigenvector, and it has no eigendecomposition. When AA is real symmetric or complex normal, QQ can be chosen orthogonal or unitary, by the spectral theorem.

Going deeper

For a student

The decomposition makes powers and functions of AA easy: Ak=QΛkQ−1A^k = Q \Lambda^k Q^{-1}, and the same holds for the exponential. It is the matrix form of the criterion that a matrix is diagonalisable iff it has a basis of eigenvectors. Distinct eigenvalues give enough eigenvectors, by this statement. When eigenvectors are missing, the Jordan normal form or the Schur decomposition takes its place.
