Eisenstein series

Summary

The Eisenstein series GkG_k of even weight k≥4k \ge 4 is the sum of (mτ+n)−k(m\tau + n)^{-k} over all pairs of integers (m,n)≠(0,0)(m, n) \neq (0, 0). It is the simplest modular form of weight kk for the modular group that is not a cusp form. Its qq-expansion involves the Riemann zeta function and the divisor sums σk−1(n)\sigma_{k-1}(n). The series E4E_4 and E6E_6 generate the ring of all modular forms for SL2(ℤ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\Z).
