Definition
Let be the upper half-plane, let and be the normalized Eisenstein series of weights and , and let . The -invariant is the function given by
Remarks
The cusp form has no zeros on , so is holomorphic on . Both and have weight , so for every in the modular group. With , , so is a meromorphic modular function with a simple pole at infinity. Example: , so ; and , so . Non-example: is not a modular form of weight , because it is unbounded as . For the elliptic curve , the -invariant is .
