Upper half-plane

Builds on Complex numbersMöbius transformationSpecial linear group

Description

The upper half-plane is the set ℍ={τ∈ℂ:Im⁡τ>0}\mathbb{H} = \set{\tau \in \C : \operatorname{Im} \tau > 0} of complex numbers with positive imaginary part. It is an open subset of ℂ\C, so it is a Riemann surface. The group SL2(ℝ)\mathrm{SL}_2(\R) acts on ℍ\mathbb{H} by Möbius transformations τ↦(aτ+b)/(cτ+d)\tau \mapsto (a\tau + b)/(c\tau + d).

Remarks

The action is well defined because Im⁡(aτ+bcτ+d)=(ad−bc)Im⁡τ∣cτ+d∣2,\operatorname{Im}\left(\frac{a\tau + b}{c\tau + d}\right) = \frac{(ad - bc) \operatorname{Im} \tau}{\abs{c\tau + d}^2}, which is positive when ad−bc=1ad - bc = 1 and Im⁡τ>0\operatorname{Im} \tau > 0. The holomorphic bijections of ℍ\mathbb{H} onto itself are exactly these Möbius transformations, and they form the group PSL2(ℝ)\mathrm{PSL}_2(\R). The map τ↦(τ−i)/(τ+i)\tau \mapsto (\tau - i)/(\tau + i) is a biholomorphic map of ℍ\mathbb{H} onto the open unit disc. With the metric ds2=(dx2+dy2)/y2ds^2 = (dx^2 + dy^2)/y^2, where τ=x+iy\tau = x + iy, the upper half-plane is a model of the hyperbolic plane, and PSL2(ℝ)\mathrm{PSL}_2(\R) acts by isometries. Modular forms are functions on ℍ\mathbb{H}.
