Definition
Let be an integer and let be the upper half-plane. A modular form of weight for the modular group is a function such that:
- is holomorphic on ;
- for all and all ;
- is bounded on the region .
Remarks
Condition 2 with gives , so with . Condition 3 then says for ; this is "holomorphic at infinity". Example: every constant function is a modular form of weight . Example: the Eisenstein series is a nonzero modular form of weight . Non-example: the j-invariant satisfies 1 and 2 with , but is unbounded as , so 3 fails. If is odd, the matrix gives , so . For a congruence subgroup , condition 2 is required only for matrices in . Condition 3 is then required at every cusp: is bounded on for every . The modular forms of weight form a finite-dimensional complex vector space .
