Functions of a complex variable Definition
Loewner differential equation
Definition
Let be the upper half-plane, and let be a continuous function, the driving function. The chordal Loewner differential equation with driving function is the initial value problem for each . For each , let be the supremum of the times up to which the solution exists with ; for set . For , the hull at time is .
Remarks
For each , the map is a conformal map of onto with the normalisation as . The hulls increase with , and the number is their half-plane capacity. Example: for , the equation gives , so with the branch that maps into . A point with has , which reaches at ; so is the vertical segment from to . Non-example: the translations are conformal self-maps of , but they do not come from the equation, since does not tend to at infinity. The radial Loewner equation, which Loewner introduced first, is the analogue for the unit disc, with a driving function with values on the unit circle and maps normalised at .
