Dedekind eta function
Builds on Upper half-planeHolomorphic functionExponential function
Definition
Let be the upper half-plane, and for let , so that . The Dedekind eta function is the function given by
Remarks
The product converges absolutely and locally uniformly, since . So is holomorphic on , and it has no zeros there. It satisfies and , with the principal branch of the square root. Example: , the cusp form of weight . Non-example: itself is not invariant under , because of the factor , so it is not a modular form for . By the pentagonal number theorem, .
