Theta function

Definition
Let be the upper half-plane. The Jacobi theta function is the function given by Its value at is the theta constant .
Remarks
For the terms decay like times a factor locally bounded in , so the series converges absolutely and locally uniformly. So is holomorphic in both variables. It satisfies and . Check of the second rule: replace by and use . The theta constant satisfies , by the Poisson summation formula. Example: , where counts the ways to write as a sum of four squares. Non-example: for real the series diverges, because every term has absolute value when is also real; this is why must lie in . Other authors use the nome and the four functions ; the function above is then .
