Electric dipole moment
Summary
The electric dipole moment of a charge distribution is the vector that measures how its positive and negative charges are separated. It is the first moment of the charge density. For a neutral distribution it is the leading term of the field far away, which decays like the inverse cube of the distance. It also governs the torque and the energy of the distribution in a uniform external field.
