Statement

Let ε0>0\varepsilon_0 > 0 be the vacuum permittivity. Consider a linear isotropic dielectric made of identical molecules with number density NN per unit volume. Assume that each molecule acquires the dipole moment p=αElocp = \alpha E_{\mathrm{loc}}, where α>0\alpha > 0 is the molecular polarizability. Assume that the local field acting on a molecule is Eloc=E+P/(3ε0)E_{\mathrm{loc}} = E + P / (3 \varepsilon_0), where EE is the macroscopic electric field and P=NpP = N p is the polarization density. Assume Nα<3ε0N \alpha < 3 \varepsilon_0. Then the relative permittivity εr\varepsilon_r of the material satisfies εr−1εr+2=Nα3ε0.\frac{\varepsilon_r - 1}{\varepsilon_r + 2} = \frac{N \alpha}{3 \varepsilon_0}.

Remarks

Put s=Nα/(3ε0)s = N \alpha / (3 \varepsilon_0). From P=Nα(E+P/(3ε0))P = N \alpha (E + P / (3 \varepsilon_0)) one gets P=3ε0sE/(1−s)P = 3 \varepsilon_0 s E / (1 - s), so χe=3s/(1−s)\chi_e = 3 s / (1 - s). Then εr=1+χe=(1+2s)/(1−s)\varepsilon_r = 1 + \chi_e = (1 + 2s)/(1 - s), and solving for ss gives the relation. The local field formula is the Lorentz field: the field at the centre of a small spherical cavity in a uniformly polarized medium, where the nearby dipoles cancel. That cancellation holds for molecules on a cubic lattice or in random positions, so the relation is a model result for such materials, mostly gases and simple liquids. Example: for a dilute gas, ss is small and the relation gives εr≈1+Nα/ε0\varepsilon_r \approx 1 + N \alpha / \varepsilon_0.

Going deeper

For a student

The relation follows from the definitions of polarization density and permittivity together with the Lorentz local field. It predicts that (εr−1)/(εr+2)(\varepsilon_r - 1)/(\varepsilon_r + 2) is proportional to the density, which agrees well with measurements on gases. Its optical form, with εr\varepsilon_r replaced by the square of the refractive index, is the Lorentz–Lorenz equation. The assumption Nα<3ε0N \alpha < 3 \varepsilon_0 is needed; as NαN \alpha approaches 3ε03 \varepsilon_0 the model predicts εr→∞\varepsilon_r \to \infty, the so-called polarization catastrophe.
