Polarization density
Summary
The polarization density of a material is the electric dipole moment per unit volume. It is a vector field on a scale large compared with atoms. It describes how an electric field slightly displaces the charges in a dielectric. Its divergence gives the bound charge density of the material. It is the bridge between microscopic dipoles and the macroscopic equations of electrostatics in matter.
