Definition
Let a medium contain bound electrons per unit volume, each with charge and mass . Let be the displacement of an electron from its rest position. The Lorentz oscillator model assumes that obeys the equation of a damped, driven harmonic oscillator Here is a natural frequency, is a damping rate, and is the local electric field. The polarization density is . For a time-harmonic field and the steady-state solution, this gives with the susceptibility and the relative permittivity .
Remarks
The steady state is with , and gives . For the poles of are , in the lower half-plane, so is analytic in the upper half-plane and satisfies the Kramers–Kronig relations. Several kinds of oscillators give a sum of such terms.
Example: with and , is positive and increasing in , so the refractive index grows with frequency: this is normal dispersion, as in glass for visible light.
Non-example: a constant susceptibility is not of Lorentz form, since every Lorentz susceptibility tends to as .
The case , free electrons, gives the optical response of the Drude model.
