Definition

Let RR be a ring with identity and let n≥2n \ge 2. For 1≤i,j≤n1 \le i, j \le n with i≠ji \ne j and r∈Rr \in R, let eij(r)∈GLn(R)e_{ij}(r) \in GL_n(R) be the elementary matrix with 11 on the diagonal, rr in position (i,j)(i, j), and 00 elsewhere. The elementary subgroup En(R)E_n(R) is the subgroup of the general linear group GLn(R)GL_n(R) generated by all eij(r)e_{ij}(r). The stable elementary subgroup E(R)E(R) is the union of the En(R)E_n(R) inside the stable general linear group GL(R)GL(R).

Remarks

The generators satisfy eij(r)eij(s)=eij(r+s)e_{ij}(r) e_{ij}(s) = e_{ij}(r + s), so eij(r)−1=eij(−r)e_{ij}(r)^{-1} = e_{ij}(-r). Whitehead's lemma: E(R)E(R) is equal to the commutator subgroup [GL(R),GL(R)][GL(R), GL(R)]. Example: over ℤ\Z, the matrix (01−10)=e12(1) e21(−1) e12(1)\begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 0 \end{pmatrix} = e_{12}(1)\, e_{21}(-1)\, e_{12}(1) lies in E2(ℤ)E_2(\Z), as multiplying out the right side shows. Non-example: diag(−1,1)∈GL2(ℤ)\mathrm{diag}(-1, 1) \in GL_2(\Z) is not in E2(ℤ)E_2(\Z), since every eij(r)e_{ij}(r) has determinant 11 and this matrix has determinant −1-1. Only the row operations "add a multiple of one row to another" are used; scaling a row and swapping two rows are not among the generators.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
