Elementary substructure
Builds on SubstructureStructureWell-formed formula
Definition
Let be a signature and let and be -structures with domains and . The structure is an elementary substructure of , written , when the following hold.
- is a substructure of .
- For every -formula and all , if and only if .
Then is an elementary extension of .
Remarks
Example: . It follows from quantifier elimination for dense linear orders without endpoints: each formula is equivalent in these orders to a quantifier-free one. A quantifier-free formula has the same truth value in a structure and in its substructures.
Non-example: let . Then is a substructure of , but not an elementary one. For , and .
Taking in clause 2 shows that implies . The non-example shows that the converse fails, since and are isomorphic. The Tarski–Vaught test gives a practical criterion.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
