Statement
Let be a bounded open set and let be an integer. Let where , and are in . Assume that is uniformly elliptic: there is with for all and . Let , and let be a weak solution of in . Here is the Sobolev space of functions on whose weak derivatives up to order lie in .
- Let be an open set whose closure is a compact subset of . Then , and where depends only on , , and the coefficients of .
- If the coefficients of and are smooth on , then agrees almost everywhere with a smooth function on .
Remarks
Proof idea for : multiply the weak form by a cut-off function and test it with difference quotients of in the direction . Uniform ellipticity bounds on independently of , and a uniform bound on difference quotients implies that the weak derivative exists in . The case of general follows by induction, since a derivative of solves an equation of the same form with a right-hand side in . Part 2 follows from part 1 for all together with the Sobolev embedding theorem, which puts inside for .
Example: a weak solution of is smooth; this is Weyl's lemma, and is then a classical harmonic function.
Ellipticity is needed. For the wave operator in the plane, is a weak solution of that is not differentiable on the line .
The regularity is local: without conditions on the boundary of and on the boundary values, need not be in up to the boundary. For the Dirichlet problem with and of class , the same conclusion holds on all of .

For a student
The standard way to solve a linear elliptic problem has two steps. First one gets a weak solution in from the Lax–Milgram theorem or the Riesz representation theorem. Then elliptic regularity upgrades it to , and with Sobolev embeddings to a classical solution. The same pattern holds in other function spaces: the Calderón–Zygmund estimates give the version for , and the Schauder estimates give the version. Hyperbolic operators have no such property, since their solutions propagate singularities of the data.
