Partial differential equations Generalized solutions and function spaces Concept
Weak solution
Summary
A weak solution of a partial differential equation is a function that satisfies the equation after multiplication by test functions and integration by parts. In this form the derivatives fall on the test functions. It need not be differentiable, and so it can describe shocks, corners and other rough behaviour. Existence theory usually first produces a weak solution, often in a Sobolev space. Then regularity theory shows that it is smoother.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
