Definition

Let Y=[0,1)nY = [0, 1)^n be the unit cell and let a=(aij) ⁣:ℝn→ℝn×na = (a_{ij}) \colon \R^n \to \R^{n \times n} be measurable and YY-periodic. Assume aa is uniformly elliptic: for constants 0<α≤β0 < \alpha \le \beta, a(y)ξ⋅ξ≥α∣ξ∣2a(y)\xi \cdot \xi \ge \alpha \abs{\xi}^2 and ∣a(y)ξ∣≤β∣ξ∣\abs{a(y)\xi} \le \beta \abs{\xi} for all y,ξ∈ℝny, \xi \in \R^n. Let Ω⊆ℝn\Omega \subseteq \R^n be a bounded open set and f∈L2(Ω)f \in L^2(\Omega). For ε>0\varepsilon > 0, let uε∈H01(Ω)u_\varepsilon \in H^1_0(\Omega) be the weak solution of the elliptic problem −div⁡(a(x/ε)∇uε)=f in Ω,uε=0 on ∂Ω.-\operatorname{div}\big(a(x/\varepsilon) \nabla u_\varepsilon\big) = f \text{ in } \Omega, \qquad u_\varepsilon = 0 \text{ on } \partial\Omega. For j=1,…,nj = 1, \dots, n, the cell problem asks for a YY-periodic χj∈Hloc1(ℝn)\chi_j \in H^1_{\mathrm{loc}}(\R^n) with mean 00 over YY and −div⁡y(a(y)(ej+∇yχj))=0 in ℝn,-\operatorname{div}_y\big(a(y)(e_j + \nabla_y \chi_j)\big) = 0 \text{ in } \R^n, where eje_j is the jj-th unit vector. The homogenized matrix is the constant matrix a0a^0 with entries aij0=∫Yei⋅a(y)(ej+∇yχj(y)) dy,a^0_{ij} = \int_Y e_i \cdot a(y)\big(e_j + \nabla_y \chi_j(y)\big) \, dy, and the homogenized problem is −div⁡(a0∇u0)=f-\operatorname{div}(a^0 \nabla u_0) = f in Ω\Omega, u0=0u_0 = 0 on ∂Ω\partial\Omega. Homogenization is the passage from the problems for uεu_\varepsilon to the homogenized problem as ε→0\varepsilon \to 0.

Remarks

The basic theorem of periodic homogenization states that a0a^0 is again uniformly elliptic and that uε→u0u_\varepsilon \to u_0 weakly in the Sobolev space H01(Ω)H^1_0(\Omega) and strongly in L2(Ω)L^2(\Omega). The formula for a0a^0 comes from the two-scale expansion uε(x)≈u0(x)+ε∑jχj(x/ε)∂ju0(x)u_\varepsilon(x) \approx u_0(x) + \varepsilon \sum_j \chi_j(x/\varepsilon) \partial_j u_0(x).

Example: in one dimension, let aa be a 11-periodic function with α≤a≤β\alpha \le a \le \beta. The cell problem gives a(y)(1+χ′)=ca(y)(1 + \chi') = c for a constant cc, and the mean-zero condition ∫01χ′=0\int_0^1 \chi' = 0 gives c=(∫01a−1 dy)−1c = \big(\int_0^1 a^{-1} \, dy\big)^{-1}. So a0=(∫01a−1 dy)−1a^0 = \big(\int_0^1 a^{-1} \, dy\big)^{-1} is the harmonic mean of aa. For aa equal to 11 on half the period and 33 on the other half, a0=3/2a^0 = 3/2, while the arithmetic mean is 22.

Non-example: the naive guess a0=∫Ya dya^0 = \int_Y a \, dy, the arithmetic mean, is wrong in general, as the example shows; the weak limit of a(x/ε)∇uεa(x/\varepsilon) \nabla u_\varepsilon is not the product of the weak limits.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
