Dirichlet eigenvalue
Definition
Let be a nonempty bounded open set and let be the Sobolev space of functions with zero boundary values. Let be the Laplacian. A real number is a Dirichlet eigenvalue of if some with is a weak solution of That is, for every . Such a is a Dirichlet eigenfunction for .
Remarks
The Dirichlet eigenvalues form a sequence , listed with multiplicity, when is connected. They are the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian, a self-adjoint operator with compact inverse. The first one is the minimum of the Rayleigh quotient: .
Example: for , the function with an integer vanishes at and and satisfies . So is a Dirichlet eigenvalue, and these are all of them.
Non-example: on , the number is not a Dirichlet eigenvalue. The solutions of are , and the boundary conditions force . With the Neumann condition instead, the constant function shows that is a Neumann eigenvalue.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
