Definition
Let be a Noetherian local ring with residue field . The embedding dimension of is the dimension of its cotangent space:
Remarks
Since is finitely generated, Nakayama's lemma shows that is the minimal number of generators of the ideal . The dimension theorem for local rings gives , where is the Krull dimension. When equality holds, is a regular local ring.
Example: for a field , the ring has , and the classes of the form a basis of , so . For the cusp , one has but .
Non-example: without the Noetherian hypothesis, need not count generators of . In a valuation ring with value group , every element of positive value is a product of two elements of value . So and , although ; here is not finitely generated.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
