Dimension theorem for local rings

Builds on Local ringKrull dimensionPrimary idealHilbert–Samuel functionLength of a moduleNoetherian ring

Statement

Let (R,𝔪)(R, \mathfrak m) be a Noetherian local ring. For n≥0n \ge 0 let χ(n)=ℓ(R/𝔪n)\chi(n) = \ell(R/\mathfrak m^n) be the length of R/𝔪nR/\mathfrak m^n; this is the Hilbert–Samuel function of RR. Then χ(n)\chi(n) agrees with a polynomial in nn for all large nn, and the following three integers are equal:

  1. the Krull dimension dim⁡R\dim R;
  2. the least number δ(R)\delta(R) of elements of 𝔪\mathfrak m that generate an 𝔪\mathfrak m-primary ideal;
  3. the degree d(R)d(R) of the polynomial that agrees with χ(n)\chi(n) for large nn.

Remarks

The usual proof shows δ(R)≥d(R)≥dim⁡R≥δ(R)\delta(R) \ge d(R) \ge \dim R \ge \delta(R). The first inequality holds because the Hilbert–Samuel polynomial of an ideal generated by ss elements has degree at most ss, and its degree does not depend on the 𝔪\mathfrak m-primary ideal. The second goes by induction on d(R)d(R). Take a chain of primes 𝔭0⊊⋯⊊𝔭r\mathfrak p_0 \subsetneq \cdots \subsetneq \mathfrak p_r and an element x∈𝔭1∖𝔭0x \in \mathfrak p_1 \setminus \mathfrak p_0. Then the ring R/(𝔭0+(x))R/(\mathfrak p_0 + (x)) has a smaller dd and still contains a chain of length r−1r - 1. The third goes by building, with the prime avoidance lemma, elements x1,…,xdim⁡Rx_1, \dots, x_{\dim R} such that each xix_i lies outside every prime of height i−1i - 1 that contains x1,…,xi−1x_1, \dots, x_{i-1}. For example, for R=k[x,y](x,y)R = k[x, y]_{(x, y)} with kk a field, χ(n)=n(n+1)/2\chi(n) = n(n+1)/2, of degree 22, the ideal 𝔪=(x,y)\mathfrak m = (x, y) needs two generators, and dim⁡R=2\dim R = 2. Consequences: dim⁡R≤dim⁡k𝔪/𝔪2\dim R \le \dim_k \mathfrak m/\mathfrak m^2 with k=R/𝔪k = R/\mathfrak m, so dim⁡R\dim R is finite, and Krull's height theorem follows.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem turns the order-theoretic Krull dimension into something computable. The number δ(R)\delta(R) gives upper bounds, since any 𝔪\mathfrak m-primary ideal with ss generators shows dim⁡R≤s\dim R \le s. The degree d(R)d(R) connects dimension with Hilbert polynomials and with the multiplicity of the ring. A list of dim⁡R\dim R elements that generates an 𝔪\mathfrak m-primary ideal is a system of parameters.
