Prime avoidance lemma

Builds on Commutative ringIdealPrime ideal

Statement

Let RR be a commutative ring, let II be an ideal of RR, and let P1,…,PnP_1, \ldots, P_n be finitely many prime ideals of RR, with n≥1n \ge 1. If I⊆P1∪⋯∪PnI \subseteq P_1 \cup \cdots \cup P_n, then I⊆PiI \subseteq P_i for some ii.

Remarks

The proof is by induction on nn. If II is contained in no PiP_i, the induction hypothesis gives, for each ii, an element xi∈Ix_i \in I that lies in no PjP_j with j≠ij \ne i; one may assume xi∈Pix_i \in P_i. Then y=x1+x2x3⋯xny = x_1 + x_2 x_3 \cdots x_n lies in II but in none of the PiP_i, using that P1P_1 is prime for the term x2⋯xnx_2 \cdots x_n. The same proof works when at most two of the PiP_i are not prime. Primality is needed: in R=𝔽2[x,y]/(x,y)2R = \F_2[x, y]/(x, y)^2, the maximal ideal (x,y)={0,x,y,x+y}(x, y) = \set{0, x, y, x + y} is the union of the three ideals (x)(x), (y)(y), (x+y)(x + y), but it is contained in none of them. Finiteness is needed: in k[x,y]k[x, y] for a field kk, every nonzero element of (x,y)(x, y) has an irreducible factor vanishing at the origin. So (x,y)(x, y) is the union of infinitely many principal prime ideals, none of which contains it.

For a student

Prime avoidance is a tool for choosing good elements. For example, let MM be a finitely generated module over a Noetherian ring, and let II be an ideal whose elements are all zero divisors on MM. Since zero divisors are the union of associated primes, II lies in the union of the finitely many associated primes of MM. So II lies in one associated prime. In dimension theory the lemma lets one choose elements outside all minimal primes, which is how regular sequences and systems of parameters are built one element at a time. If RR contains an infinite field, the conclusion holds even when none of the ideals PiP_i is prime, by a vector space argument.
