Statement

Let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring and let MM be an RR-module. An element r∈Rr \in R is a zero divisor on MM if rm=0rm = 0 for some nonzero m∈Mm \in M. Then the set of zero divisors on MM is the union of the associated primes of MM.

Remarks

If P=Ann⁡(m)P = \operatorname{Ann}(m) is associated, then each r∈Pr \in P kills m≠0m \ne 0, so rr is a zero divisor. Conversely, if rm=0rm = 0 with m≠0m \ne 0, the set of annihilators of nonzero elements that contain Ann⁡(m)\operatorname{Ann}(m) has a maximal member, since RR is Noetherian. A maximal annihilator Ann⁡(m′)\operatorname{Ann}(m') is prime: if ab∈Ann⁡(m′)ab \in \operatorname{Ann}(m') and bm′≠0b m' \ne 0, then Ann⁡(bm′)⊇Ann⁡(m′)+(a)\operatorname{Ann}(b m') \supseteq \operatorname{Ann}(m') + (a), so a∈Ann⁡(m′)a \in \operatorname{Ann}(m'). For example, an integer rr is a zero divisor on ℤ/12ℤ\Z/12\Z if and only if gcd⁡(r,12)>1\gcd(r, 12) > 1, that is, r∈(2)∪(3)r \in (2) \cup (3). Taking M=RM = R, the set of zero divisors of RR, together with 00, is a finite union of prime ideals.

Going deeper

For a student

Combine it with finiteness of associated primes and prime avoidance. This shows: if an ideal II consists of zero divisors on a finitely generated module MM, then II kills a nonzero element of MM. This is the basic step in the theory of regular sequences and depth. It is also used to show that RR has a non-zero-divisor in an ideal not contained in any associated prime of RR.
