Commutative algebra Primary decomposition Theorem
Finiteness of associated primes
Builds on Noetherian ringFinitely generated moduleAssociated prime
Statement
Let be a commutative Noetherian ring and let be a finitely generated -module. Then the set of associated primes of is finite.
Remarks
The proof builds a chain of submodules with for prime ideals . Each step picks an associated prime of , which exists when this module is nonzero, and the chain stops because is a Noetherian module. Then , because associated primes of an extension lie among those of the two pieces. For example, is the finite set of ideals for the primes dividing . Finite generation is needed: the -module , over all primes , has every as an associated prime.
Going deeper
For a student
Associated primes of a nonzero module also exist, so is finite and nonempty when . With the result that zero divisors are the union of associated primes, this lets one use prime avoidance to find non-zero-divisors outside finitely many primes. This is a key step in building regular sequences and in the theory of depth.
