Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an -module. For , let be the annihilator of . A prime ideal of is an associated prime of if for some . The set of associated primes of is written .
Remarks
For an ideal of , the associated primes of usually means . Example: for over , and , so and are associated primes; in fact . Non-example: is not an associated prime of , because kills every element, so no annihilator is . For , the annihilator of every nonzero element is , so . Equivalently, when has a submodule isomorphic to . For rings that are not Noetherian, some authors use other variants, such as weakly associated primes.
