Definition

Let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring and let I≠RI \ne R be an ideal of RR. An associated prime PP of R/IR/I is an embedded prime of II if there is another associated prime P′P' of R/IR/I with P′⊊PP' \subsetneq P. An associated prime that is not embedded is called a minimal or isolated prime of II.

Remarks

Example: for I=(x2,xy)I = (x^2, xy) in k[x,y]k[x, y] over a field kk, the associated primes are (x)(x) and (x,y)(x, y), and (x)⊊(x,y)(x) \subsetneq (x, y), so (x,y)(x, y) is embedded. Non-example: (x)(x) is not embedded for the same II, because no associated prime is strictly smaller. The minimal primes of II in this sense are exactly the minimal prime ideals over II. In a primary decomposition, the components at embedded primes are not unique, while those at minimal primes are. The same terms apply to the associated primes of a module.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
