Primary decomposition
Builds on Commutative ringIdealPrimary idealRadical of an ideal
Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be an ideal of . A primary decomposition of is an expression , with , in which each is a primary ideal. The decomposition is minimal if these two conditions hold:
- The radicals are pairwise distinct.
- For each , the intersection of the with is not contained in .
Remarks
Example: in over a field , , where is prime and is -primary; the radicals differ and neither term contains the other, so the decomposition is minimal. Non-example: in is not a primary decomposition, because is not primary. The decomposition is another minimal one, so the primary components need not be unique. In the same way one defines a primary decomposition of a submodule of a module , with primary submodules.
