Builds on Noetherian ringPrime idealHeight of a prime idealMinimal prime idealIdeal generated by a subset

Statement

Let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring and let I=(x1,…,xn)I = (x_1, \dots, x_n) be an ideal of RR generated by nn elements. Let PP be a prime ideal of RR that is minimal among the prime ideals containing II. Then the height of PP is at most nn.

Remarks

The proof is by induction on nn, with Krull's principal ideal theorem as the case n=1n = 1. For the step, take a prime Q⊊PQ \subsetneq P with no prime strictly between them. Since PP is minimal over II, some xix_i lies outside QQ, and one shows that QQ is minimal over an ideal with n−1n - 1 generators. For example, in k[x,y,z]k[x, y, z] over a field kk, the prime (x,y)(x, y) is minimal over the ideal generated by xx and yy, and its height is 22. A converse holds: every prime ideal of height nn in a Noetherian ring is minimal over some ideal generated by nn elements. As a consequence, every prime ideal of a Noetherian ring has finite height. A Noetherian local ring has finite Krull dimension, at most the number of generators of its maximal ideal.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the base of dimension theory of Noetherian local rings. It gives dim⁡R≤\dim R \le the minimal number of generators of the maximal ideal, which leads to regular local rings and to systems of parameters. It also shows that the prime ideals of a Noetherian ring satisfy the descending chain condition.
