Krull dimension
Builds on Commutative ringPrime ideal
Definition
Let be a nonzero commutative ring. A chain of prime ideals of has length . The Krull dimension is the supremum of the lengths of all such chains, an element of .
Remarks
For the zero ring, which has no prime ideals, the dimension is set to or by convention. Example: ; the chain for a prime has length , and no chain is longer, since every nonzero prime ideal of is maximal. Non-example of a chain: does not show , because is not a prime ideal. For a field , , and the polynomial ring in infinitely many variables has infinite dimension. A Noetherian ring can still have infinite dimension, by an example of Nagata.
