Statement

Let RR be a commutative Noetherian ring and let x∈Rx \in R. Let PP be a prime ideal of RR that is minimal among the prime ideals containing xx. Then the height of PP is at most 11.

Remarks

After localizing at PP, one may assume that RR is local with maximal ideal PP, and then R/xRR/xR is Artinian. If Q⊊PQ \subsetneq P is prime, the chain of ideals xR+Q(n)xR + Q^{(n)} stabilizes, where Q(n)Q^{(n)} is the symbolic power; with Nakayama's lemma this gives Q(n)=Q(n+1)Q^{(n)} = Q^{(n+1)} for large nn. Then QnRQ=0Q^n R_Q = 0 in RQR_Q, so RQR_Q is Artinian, and QQ has height 00. For example, in k[x,y]k[x, y] the prime (x)(x) is minimal over xx and has height 11. The Noetherian hypothesis is needed. In a valuation domain whose value group is ℤ×ℤ\Z \times \Z with the lexicographic order, the maximal ideal has height 22 but is minimal over a single element. If xx is not a zero divisor and not a unit, every prime minimal over xx has height exactly 11.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem, the Hauptidealsatz, is the base case of Krull's height theorem for ideals generated by nn elements. Through that generalisation, it shows that every prime ideal of a Noetherian ring has finite height. It also gives the criterion that a Noetherian domain is a unique factorisation domain exactly when every height one prime is principal. It is a basic tool in dimension theory, for example in the dimension theorem for local rings.
