Definition

Let RR be a commutative ring, let PP be a prime ideal of RR, and let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer. The nn-th symbolic power of PP is the ideal P(n)={r∈R:sr∈Pn for some s∈R∖P}.P^{(n)} = \set{r \in R : sr \in P^n \text{ for some } s \in R \setminus P}.

Remarks

Equivalently, P(n)P^{(n)} is the preimage in RR of the ideal PnRPP^n R_P of the localization RPR_P. One always has Pn⊆P(n)⊆PP^n \subseteq P^{(n)} \subseteq P, and P(1)=PP^{(1)} = P. When RR is Noetherian, P(n)P^{(n)} is the PP-primary component of PnP^n, and it is the smallest PP-primary ideal that contains PnP^n. Example: in R=k[x,y,z]/(xy−z2)R = k[x, y, z]/(xy - z^2) over a field kk, with P=(x,z)P = (x, z), one has y∉Py \notin P and yx=z2∈P2yx = z^2 \in P^2, so x∈P(2)x \in P^{(2)}; but x∉P2x \notin P^2, as P2P^2 is generated by elements of degree 22. Non-example: in the same ring, y∉P(2)y \notin P^{(2)}, since y∉Py \notin P and P(2)⊆PP^{(2)} \subseteq P. For a maximal ideal 𝔪\mathfrak{m}, the power 𝔪n\mathfrak{m}^n is already primary, so 𝔪(n)=𝔪n\mathfrak{m}^{(n)} = \mathfrak{m}^n.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
