Definition

Let RR be a ring and let MM be a left RR-module. An endomorphism of MM is a map f ⁣:M→Mf \colon M \to M with f(x+y)=f(x)+f(y)f(x + y) = f(x) + f(y) and f(rx)=rf(x)f(rx) = r f(x) for all x,y∈Mx, y \in M and r∈Rr \in R. The endomorphism ring End⁡R(M)\End_R(M) is the set of endomorphisms of MM with the operations (f+g)(x)=f(x)+g(x),(fg)(x)=f(g(x)).(f + g)(x) = f(x) + g(x), \qquad (fg)(x) = f(g(x)).

Remarks

End⁡R(M)\End_R(M) is a ring with zero map as zero and the identity map id⁡M\id_M as unit element. For an abelian group AA, viewed as a ℤ\Z-module, one writes End⁡(A)=End⁡ℤ(A)\End(A) = \End_\Z(A). Example: End⁡ℤ(ℤ/nℤ)≅ℤ/nℤ\End_\Z(\Z/n\Z) \cong \Z/n\Z. The check: an endomorphism ff is determined by f(1)=af(1) = a, since f(k)=kaf(k) = ka, and every aa gives one; composition corresponds to multiplication of the values aa. Non-example: the map x↦x+1x \mapsto x + 1 on ℤ\Z is not in End⁡ℤ(ℤ)\End_\Z(\Z), since it does not preserve addition: it sends 00 to 11. For a field KK, choosing a basis gives End⁡K(Kn)≅Mn(K)\End_K(K^n) \cong M_n(K). For the ring RR as a left module over itself, End⁡R(R)≅Rop\End_R(R) \cong R^{\mathrm{op}}, the opposite ring, through f↦f(1)f \mapsto f(1).
