Energy fluctuations in the canonical ensemble

Builds on Canonical ensembleVarianceExpected value

Statement

Let Ω\Omega be a countable set of microstates with energy H ⁣:Ω→ℝH \colon \Omega \to \R. Assume Z(β)=∑ω∈Ωe−βH(ω)Z(\beta) = \sum_{\omega \in \Omega} e^{-\beta H(\omega)} is finite for all β\beta in an open interval I⊆(0,∞)I \subseteq (0, \infty). For β∈I\beta \in I, let ⟨⋅⟩β\langle \cdot \rangle_\beta be the expected value under the canonical ensemble e−βH/Z(β)e^{-\beta H} / Z(\beta). Then ln⁡Z\ln Z is infinitely differentiable on II, and ⟨H⟩β=−ddβln⁡Z(β),Var⁡β(H)=d2dβ2ln⁡Z(β)=−d⟨H⟩βdβ.\langle H \rangle_\beta = -\frac{d}{d\beta} \ln Z(\beta), \qquad \operatorname{Var}_\beta(H) = \frac{d^2}{d\beta^2} \ln Z(\beta) = -\frac{d \langle H \rangle_\beta}{d\beta}. With β=1/(kBT)\beta = 1/(k_B T) and the heat capacity CV=d⟨H⟩/dTC_V = d \langle H \rangle / dT, this reads Var⁡(H)=kBT2CV\operatorname{Var}(H) = k_B T^2 C_V.

Remarks

Proof idea: ZZ is a Laplace transform that converges on an open interval, so it can be differentiated term by term. Then Z′/Z=−⟨H⟩Z'/Z = -\langle H \rangle and Z′′/Z=⟨H2⟩Z''/Z = \langle H^2 \rangle, which give (ln⁡Z)′′=⟨H2⟩−⟨H⟩2(\ln Z)'' = \langle H^2 \rangle - \langle H \rangle^2. Since a variance is nonnegative, the heat capacity is nonnegative: CV≥0C_V \ge 0. Example: for NN independent two-level units with energies 00 and ε\varepsilon, ln⁡Z=Nln⁡(1+e−βε)\ln Z = N \ln (1 + e^{-\beta \varepsilon}). So both ⟨H⟩\langle H \rangle and Var⁡(H)\operatorname{Var}(H) are proportional to NN, and the relative fluctuation Var⁡(H)/⟨H⟩\sqrt{\operatorname{Var}(H)} / \langle H \rangle decays like N−1/2N^{-1/2}.

Going deeper

For a student

This is the simplest fluctuation–response relation: a response coefficient, the heat capacity, equals a variance in equilibrium. The smallness of relative fluctuations for large NN is the heuristic reason for the equivalence of ensembles. Similar computations in the grand canonical ensemble relate the variance of the particle number to the compressibility. At a critical point the heat capacity per particle can diverge, and then energy fluctuations are anomalously large.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
