Canonical ensemble

Summary

The canonical ensemble describes a system with a fixed number of particles in contact with a heat bath at a fixed temperature TT. It gives each microstate of energy EE a weight proportional to e−E/(kBT)e^{-E / (k_B T)}, the Boltzmann distribution. The normalizing constant ZZ is the partition function, and the free energy F=−kBTln⁡ZF = -k_B T \ln Z gives all thermodynamic quantities by differentiation. It is the ensemble used most often in calculations, because independent parts of a system give independent factors of ZZ.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
