Grand canonical ensemble
Definition
Let a system have, for each particle number , a countable set of microstates with energy . Let and let be the chemical potential. Assume that the grand partition function is finite. The grand canonical ensemble is the probability distribution on the disjoint union of the that gives the probability
Remarks
Equivalently, , where is the activity and is the canonical partition function with particles. For classical particles in a box, is the canonical integral with the factor . Example: a single site that is empty (, energy ) or holds one particle (, energy ) has . Its mean occupation is . Non-example: for one bosonic mode of energy with , the series diverges, so no grand canonical ensemble exists. The grand potential is , and for a homogeneous system , where is the pressure.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
