Microstate
Summary
A microstate of a physical system is a complete description of the state of every one of its microscopic parts. A macrostate is described by a few bulk quantities, such as energy, volume and particle number, and many microstates are compatible with one macrostate. Counting or weighting the microstates behind a macrostate is the basic step of statistical mechanics, and it leads to entropy.
