Definition
Consider a physical system made of many components.
- Take a classical system of point particles in . A microstate is a point of the phase space . Here is the position and the momentum of particle .
- Take a lattice model with a finite set of sites and a finite set of single-site values. A microstate is a configuration .
- Take a quantum system with Hilbert space . A microstate is a pure state, that is, a unit vector of up to a phase. In counting arguments one uses the vectors of an orthonormal basis of energy eigenstates.
A macrostate is a set of microstates singled out by the values of a few macroscopic quantities. Typical such quantities are the energy , the volume and the number of particles.
Remarks
Example: in a chain of spins with values in , the configuration is a microstate, and the set of configurations with is a macrostate. That macrostate contains microstates when is even and lies in . Non-example: the pair of energy and volume of a gas is not a microstate, since it does not fix the position and momentum of each particle. The number of microstates in a macrostate enters Boltzmann's formula .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
